The Rise of Enlightened Sexism by Susan J. Douglas →
Today, we once again have what Betty Friedan famously called “a problem with no name.” Millions of young women — the girl power generation — have been told that they can do or be anything, yet they also believe their most important task is to be slim, “hot,” and non-threatening to men. Once they get out in the work force, though, they learn that there still is...

Despite GOP Wins, Hill May See Fewer Women →
Via NPR:
There are still a few outstanding races involving women yet to be decided, but when the final count is tallied, this year’s election will probably be the first time in 30 years that the number of women serving in Congress declines.
It started as a banner year for female candidates. More of them ran in party primaries than ever before, especially Republican women, who set a new...

Today is National Spirit Day
From GLAAD:
WHAT IS SPIRIT DAY?
The idea behind Spirit Day, first created by teenager Brittany McMillan earlier this month, is a simple one, not dissimilar to the idea of “Spirit Week” held in many high schools, and can be summed up in three words: Everyone Rally Together.
Spirit Day honors the teenagers who had taken their own lives in recent weeks. But just as importantly,...

If women’s news receives the coverage it deserves during the next week or so, then there will be stories about women and the vote. Headlines may read something like: “Ninety Years Since Women Were Given the Vote!”
The problem is “were given” is dead-on inaccurate; even the wording, “got the vote” does not begin to explain the battle that women...
Elena Kagan: The Fourth in 425 Years →
It took us almost 200 years as a country to get the first woman on the U.S. Supreme Court. Now, almost 30 years later, we will soon have three women serving together—two named by President Barack Obama in just two years. That’s remarkable—and the fact that the latest nominee is such an extraordinary candidate makes the news even better.

Federal Same-Sex Marriage Ban Unconstitutional,... →
Declaring that no “fairly conceivable set of facts” could justify its discriminatory provisions, a noted federal judge in Massachusetts Thursday ruled unconstitutional Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, the Clinton-era federal statute which defined marriage to include “only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife.”

“It’s wrong for schools to do that, it’s wrong to discriminate,” McMillen told The Associated Press.

I am not arguing that the accused is guilty. Rather, I invite us to use the DM’s coverage of this allegation as an opportunity to...

Letter to the Editor: Sexual Violence
Note: The Daily Mississippian agreed to publish the following op-ed in its April 31 issue, but it did not appear in the paper and the DM hasn’t yet responded to my requests to know why.
